Specifying components for a 11kV or 22kV or 33kV or 66kV network carries significant responsibility. A failure in a cable joint can result in six-figure losses from outages, repair costs, and equipment damage. Moving beyond brand names and data sheets, true specification is based on engineering fundamentals. Here are the five critical factors our engineers evaluate.
This is the non-negotiable starting point. Do not accept a manufacturer’s "compliance claim." Demand the actual independent type test certificate. This document proves the design has passed rigorous tests for partial discharge, lightning impulse, thermal cycling, and water tightness. Without it, you are accepting unknown risk.
What is the primary insulating material? Silicone rubber, EPDM, or polyolefin? Each has advantages. Silicone offers superb tracking resistance and elasticity. critically, examine the anti-tracking and anti-hydrophobic ageing properties of the material, as these determine long-term performance under pollution and wet conditions.
Sure, it fits XLPE cable. But does the kit accommodate the exact screen type (wire, tape, semiconductor)? Is it compatible with your chosen connector (bolted, compression)? Does the sealing system match your environmental conditions (direct burial, flooding, chemical exposure)? Mismatches here are a primary cause of field failures.
The best design fails if installed incorrectly. Evaluate the kit for error-proofing features. Does it have clear markings, pre-moulded shapes, and components that simplify the process? Does the manufacturer provide certified training, detailed manuals, and video guides? The easier it is to install correctly, the more reliable your network will be.
Who are you buying from? A trading company or an expert manufacturer? Investigate their:
Specification is an exercise in risk mitigation. By prioritizing independent certification, material quality, precise compatibility, installation design, and manufacturer reputation, you move from simply buying a product to investing in guaranteed network reliability.
